It is easy to forget everything that goes into making a good meal. In our lives of easy access and abundance the hands, the soil and the effort behind food is often forgotten.

The next time you sit down for a meal, think through what and who you are grateful for, for enabling that meal to happen. Which parts of nature were involved? Which humans were involved, past and present? What does the meal mean to you, do certain dishes have a greater meaning than others? What is it about food that makes you feel grateful? How do you want to show your gratitude for it?

If you are celebrating Thanksgiving this week, take the opportunity to practice your beginner’s mind on these questions. And why not challenge those you are sharing a meal with to do the same?
